Bella Princesa
This sweet, grateful senior mare came from a life of hard work on an Amish farm. Her age is not known as her top teeth are ground down, probably from "cribbing" (chewing on wood fences.) She came from a kill pen, worn out and emaciated, but shis happy and content now at Legacy Ranch.

Lady Hope
Lady Hope was rescued with Lonnie, and they are kindred spirits! She s a sweet soul who enjoys her wet grain and alfalfa. Lady is Lonnie's defender and protector, ensuring that no other horse could harm him. They are always together, and Lady Hope has encouraged Lonnie to keep getting stronger!
Buck Montana
Buck Montana is believed to come from a cow ranch in Montana, where he might have been a cutting horse or used for trail riding. He's well-trained and calm, and he does love his alfalfa! He was treated for strangles when he arrived, and will be a happy member of the herd...maybe even a riding horse.
Mustangs at Legacy Ranch
From time to time, the Bureau of Land Management conducts a roundup of wild mustangs to remove them from public lands. The horses, who have been running free in herd "families," are rounded up with helicopters and shipped to auction, where they are unlikely to be purchased because they are unhandled. In the summer of 2023, a group of mustang mares and foals ended up in kill pens in Bowie, Texas. Foals were due to be separated from their mothers, regardless of their age, and the mares shipped to Mexico for slaughter.

Legacy Ranch and Rescue, along with several other small rescues in the area, stepped up and raised funds to save as many mother/foal pairs as they could. Three mares with foals and one who had lost her baby, all survivors of this roundup, are now safe and happy at Legacy Ranch. To our surprise, all of these mares came to us pregnant produced foals in the spring of 2024...all colts!
